What rank tracking does well
Rank tracking is a good instrument for a search result. It records where a page appears for a keyword, how the position moves, which SERP features are present and which competitors sit above or below. For Google, that is still a useful daily signal: it catches a drop after a deploy, a lost featured snippet or a new competitor entering the top three.
If your acquisition plan is “rank a page in Google and earn the click”, keep the rank tracker. It is not obsolete.
What it cannot see
An AI answer is assembled at request time. It may not have a stable list, it may cite different sources on different runs, and it may recommend a vendor that ranks on page three in Google. Rank tracking does not record the answer, the recommendation sentence, the cited sources or the variance between runs.
It also cannot tell you which page did the work. A rank tracker shows the page that ranks; an answer audit shows the page the model read. Those are often different pages.
Why “AI rank” is a trap
Logged-out AI sessions do not expose a stable ranking that is comparable across users. The same question can produce a different order, a different set of names and a different source list. A tool that reports “position 3 in ChatGPT” is reporting one sample, usually without the date, the location or the variance.
That does not make the answer useless. It makes the unit wrong. The useful unit is a dated sample of answers, with mention rate, recommendation rate, position and citations. The spread between runs is part of the finding, not noise to average away. See the method.
How to use both
- Rank tracking for the Google surface. Use it to catch technical drops, SERP feature changes and competitor movement. Keep it.
- An answer audit for the AI surface. Fix the ten buying questions, run three samples each, read the citations and write down the gaps.
- Fix the page the answer cites. If a review site or directory is doing the work, update that page. If your own page is cited but wrong, correct it first.
- Re-run at day 60. Compare the same questions. A change in the answer without a change in the inputs is noise.
When rank tracking is enough
If your buyers search Google and click a link, and your category is not a shortlist category, a rank tracker plus an SEO audit is enough. If buyers ask an assistant for a shortlist, the rank tracker is only half the picture.

Questions
Does AI visibility replace rank tracking?
No. They measure different surfaces. Rank tracking records Google positions; an answer audit records what an assistant said and cited in a dated sample.
Can I track AI answers daily?
You can sample daily, but a daily number is not a stable rank. The diagnostic uses three runs per question over several days and reports the variance.
What should I do with a page that ranks but is not cited?
Read the sources the answer did cite. The issue may be the source mix, not the page. Fix or update the page that is actually doing the work, then re-run the same questions.
