VisibleDiagnostic Run the check

A technical SEO audit fixes the floor. It does not tell you what the answer said.

Crawl access, indexation, canonicals, rendering and speed are necessary conditions. They are not the same as being named in an AI answer. Here is what each audit covers, and how to sequence them without doing the work twice.

What a technical SEO audit fixes

A technical SEO audit covers the floor: crawl access, indexation, status codes, canonical tags, duplicate content, JavaScript rendering, page speed, mobile layout, internal links, sitemaps and structured data. It answers a narrow but essential question: can a search engine reach, understand and keep the page?

If the answer is no, nothing else matters. A page that is blocked, canonicalised away, rendered empty or buried behind a broken internal link will not rank, and it will not be read by an answer engine either.

Why it still matters for AI visibility

Answer engines retrieve pages. They may use a different crawler, a different index and a different selection logic, but they still need a page they can fetch and parse. A technical audit is the first filter on whether your content is even a candidate.

It is not sufficient. A technically perfect page can be absent from every AI answer. The technical audit clears the floor; it does not tell you what the answer said.

What it cannot see

Those are answer-level questions. They need a different instrument: a dated sample of buying questions, not a crawl report.

The sequence that avoids duplicated work

  1. Technical audit: fix crawl, index, canonical, rendering, speed and internal links.
  2. Content audit: find thin, overlapping or stale pages that should be merged, rewritten or removed. See content audit vs AI source audit.
  3. AI visibility diagnostic: sample ten buying questions, three runs each, and audit the cited sources.
  4. Source work: fix the page or profile the answer actually used, then re-run the same questions at day 60.

When a technical audit is enough

If the site cannot be crawled, indexed or rendered, stop and fix that first. If the site is technically clean and the category is not a shortlist category, a technical audit plus a content audit may be all you need. If buyers ask an assistant for a shortlist, add the AI layer.

Questions

Does a technical audit improve AI visibility?

It removes a blocker. A page that cannot be fetched or parsed is not a candidate. But a clean crawl does not guarantee a mention or a citation in an AI answer.

Should I fix technical issues before buying the diagnostic?

If the site is blocked or not indexed, yes. If the floor is clean, skip the repeat and start with the answer sample.

What should I do after the technical fixes?

Run the AI visibility diagnostic on the ten buying questions, read the cited sources and re-run the identical set at day 60. Do not add pages just to look busy.
