AEO and GEO are not the same job. One is the answer box; the other is the citation set.

AEO is about earning the direct answer in a search result. GEO is about being cited or recommended inside a generated answer. They overlap, but they are measured differently and they fail for different reasons.

AEO and GEO are not the same job

AEO — answer engine optimization — is usually about earning the direct answer: the featured snippet, the voice answer, the “People Also Ask” box. GEO — generative engine optimization — is about being cited or recommended inside a generated answer. They overlap, but they are measured on different surfaces and they fail for different reasons.

A page can own a featured snippet and still be absent from a ChatGPT shortlist. A brand can be recommended by an assistant and never appear in a traditional answer box. Treating the two terms as synonyms leads to buying the wrong work.

What AEO measures

The unit is the query and the result page. AEO is still search-result work: concise answers, clear headings, FAQ structure, schema and a page that deserves the snippet.

What GEO measures

GEO starts from a buying question and samples the generated answer. It records whether the brand is mentioned, whether it is recommended rather than listed, where it first appears relative to competitors, and which sources the answer cited.

The unit is the answer, not the page. One question can produce different answers on different runs, so the diagnostic uses three samples and reports the variance. The source audit is usually the most actionable part: it tells you which page or profile is doing the work.

Where they overlap

Both need a crawlable page, a clear claim, structured data and enough third-party corroboration to be trusted. A page that cannot be read will not be quoted. A page with no distinct point of view is hard to cite in either surface.

The difference is the question each one answers. AEO asks: can this page win the answer box? GEO asks: when a buyer asks for a recommendation, does the generated answer include this brand, and which sources made that happen?

How to sequence them

  1. Fix the question pages. Give each important question a page with a direct, useful answer, not a keyword page with a vague intro.
  2. Measure the AI answer. Sample ten buying questions three times each. Keep the raw answers and citations.
  3. Work on the cited sources. If a review site or directory is doing the work, update that asset. If your own page is cited but wrong, correct it first.
  4. Re-run the same questions at day 60. Do not add questions after you see the result.
Do not buy GEO as a guarantee No one can promise a citation in a generative answer. AI answers vary by session, location and model. A useful GEO engagement sells a dated sample, a source audit and a plan — not a rank.

Questions

Is AEO just SEO?

It is a subset of search work focused on direct answers. It still depends on crawlability, page quality and query intent; it is not a separate channel.

Is GEO just AEO with a new name?

No. AEO targets answer boxes in search results; GEO targets generated answers and their citations. They overlap in inputs but differ in measurement.

Which should I do first?

If the site is not crawlable or the question pages are thin, fix that first. If the floor is clean, measure the AI answer and let the cited sources decide the work. See technical SEO audit.
